Reader comment on item: Another Islamist Soldier Turns Terrorist in Texas

Submitted by Prof. Paul Eidelberg (Israel), Aug 2, 2011 at 07:57

Dr. Pipes tacitly contends that his understanding of Islam is superior to that of Mr. Abdo. He notes that the army consensus regarding Abdo "has vast implications for Islam in America," to the extent of "suggesting that Muslims constitute a fifth column and cannot be loyal citizens. I disagree: Muslims can be patriotic Americans and exemplary soldiers." Since this is a mere assertion on the part of Dr. Pipes, surely he should cite Islamic scriptures such as the Quran and the Hadith to lend credence to his assertion?

Daniel Pipes replies:

I have been writing about Islam for close to forty years and have yet to cite scripture. Rather, I am a historian who looks at what Muslims actually do. In this case, there are thousands of Muslim soldiers in the US military who perform honorably. That's what counts, not quotations.
