I agree with most of what you've said. Ben Ali was, unfortunately, running a kleptocracy. He was however intolerant of Islamism and for this alone was worth supporting as an ally, much like the House of Saud and Mubarak of Egypt. Our war on Islamism, much like our victory over Communism in the former Soviet Union, creates strange but necessary bedfellows.
