Mr. Helprin seems to be one of the few who recognizes the threat. Bin Ladin's recent tape expresses something I have held for years. The Goal of the Islamists is to bring down the US the same way the Soviet Union was brought down. The plan is to draw us into a protracted and expensive conflict that will divide and bankrupt the US. They want us out of the middle east so they can control their own destiny, which in their eyes is world domination by Islam.
