Reader comment on item: Further Reactions to My "Bomb Iran" Argument

Submitted by Kepha Hor (United States), Nov 5, 2010 at 16:39

David Broder, the Viet Nam-era dove, has gone boink. At this stage, the only thing that the USA can do about a nuclear Iran is throw a nuclear umbrella over threatened allies and make it clear that Iranian first use will be met with massive US retaliation.

Doubtlessly, a war with Iran will be sold to our gullible public as a way to rescue Iran's women and gays. Such propaganda will play in Tehran as "We're coming to rape your wives and daughters; and subject your sons to the depredations of that mullah you got rid of two years ago", and unite Iran in resistance.

While the clerocracy in Iran may be unpopular with large sections of the populace, it surely will be able to turn itself into the center of national resistance--a little like Chiang Kai-shek in China after 1937. And, even if the USA did win an invasion of Iran, we'd probably end up doing little save making Iran safe for the Mojaheddin-e-Khalq, a miserable mass of Muslim Marxist misfits who, BTW, boast about being the first "revolutionary fighters" into the "nest of spies" back in 1979. Worst, an American misadventure--and it will surely be that--in Iran will only invite Communist China to attack Taiwan and help Pyongyang launch a Second Korean War. Further, with both Mainland China and Russia firm friends of Tehran, and America's allies Germany and France the leaders in "engagement" with the mullah-ocracy, would America have any dependable allies at all in such a conflict?

Given how the Islamic world seems to run on the adage "me against my brother; my brother and I against my cousin; my brothers, cousins, and I against everyone else", the US would have no Middle Eastern allies against Tehran; and might easily ignite a hostile pan-Islamic movement.

No, Iran ought to stew in its own juices for a while, and America simply ought to keep the proverbial powder dry. Unfortunately, the GOP will probably prove itself the "Stupid Party" once again, and let itself be snookered into war with Iran --and end up saving Obama's hide in the process. Please, GOP: this time, be the party of "Hell, no, we won't go!"
