Reader comment on item: Geert Wilders, Close to Exoneration

Submitted by Brian (United States), Nov 2, 2010 at 22:20

I absolutely believe in the Enlightenment principle of free speech, however, we must accept that we do not live in a world where equality is either reality or any sort of ideal. Implying that there should be no double-standard about would logically that all other relationships should be equal. It is clear that due to the uneven power and privilege wielded by Westerners, an unequal right to voice free opinions is a fair compromise over a fully equal reality. That is depending on one's preference. My personal preference is to continue to enjoy this great economic and epistemological power that we Westerns enjoy over the Islamic world, even if it means holding our tongue on occasion.
