these women were trying to escape the punishment. Non-muslim do not understand Islam and they were trying to utilize this to their advantage. It true that a pious women needs to obey her husband but being a muslim needs to obey ALLAH and his messenger first. And in such act of obeying ALLAH requires her to be against her husband or father she must leave them but not the teaching of Allah thru Quran and sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.S)
