JUMPING THE SINKING SHIP OF EUROPEReader comment on item: Europeans Fleeing Eurabia Submitted by DANIEL REDMOND (United States), Mar 25, 2008 at 20:06 As much as I blame European liberalism for the decline of Europe, I feel somewhat sad to see Western Europe become a sinking ship that is going down without a fight. Most of the progress of mankind has evolved out of European culture. The most truly humane societies, the greatest works of art and literature and music, the greatest examples of engineering and architecture, and the fairnest most humane governments have all evolved out of Europe. To see these same societies go belly-up without a fight against the primitivism and empty-headed fanaticism of Islam is a tragedy on an enormous scale. They say that no good deed goes unpunished and that sometimes the best of intentions can go awry. I believe that to the extent that my own country, well-meaning in its protectionist principles, helped create this weakened and moribund relic of what was once a great continent by its presence in NATO for the past five decades has, like an over-indulgent parent, done a disservice to Europeans by making them too soft and weak to fight for their own survival. Through decades of a Cold War occupation of Europe the United States protected Western Europe against the threat of Soviet expansionism. In response to this Western Europe developed into a cluster of soft, welfare-driven societies clinging to anachronistic Marxist principles that have now led to its own dissolution and near collapse. It is truly a sad state of affairs. DANIEL REDMOND Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
