Reader comment on item: Let Iraqis run Iraq

Submitted by Boris Frenkel (United States), Oct 19, 2003 at 00:44

...Dr. Pipes! It seems to me it does not go beyond the obvious - the question is not whether or not to hand over power to Iraqis the sooner the better, most people would support it. The real question is - HOW to do it. Just leave Iraq and let another Saddam take power? Or assume that Iraqis will immediately jump in to democracy, prosperity and order? Either would be naive or stupid. It's OK to advocate your idea, Dr. Pipes, but please give us your thoughts on how exactly you envision a transition of power technically? I don't think anybody can give a realistic plan or method at this point, let alone any realistic time estimate. For that reason I support president's statement that we should stay in Iraq as long as necessary, but not a day longer. Yes, it is not specific, but it is as good as we can do.
