Yes to Cardinal Lehmann and a speech for the next US President

Reader comment on item: The Catholic Church Demands Reciprocity from Muslims

Submitted by Robert Odean (Canada), Dec 28, 2007 at 11:43

I wish that a candidate for the president of the United States had the courage to say the following:

"We hereby announce to the world that we support unequivocally the existence of the State of Israel; that we stand by and support Israel's right -- like that of any nation -- to self-defense against any and all acts of war; that we regard all acts of war against Israel as threats to the peace of the Middle East and to the well being of the world; and that we hereby suspend all meaningless efforts to work for peace until such time as the Palestinians and their Arab supporters recognize and announce Israel's right to exist, and begin by the simple action of teaching their children that hatred of and violence against Israel is no longer acceptable."

"We hereby call on the Islamic world to begin the task of self-examination: to answer the question why it is in their best interest to hold such animus toward Jews? We ask the Islamic world: why they are committed to a war against all infidels? We ask what kind of God they serve that demands death to the infidels. We ask the Islamic world to begin to question this primitive belief.

"We declare that it is time to face the world of the ancients in the light of the 21st century. It is time we move beyond this conflict. We have allowed ourselves to be subject to this plague for far too long. For the children of the world -- it must end! Let us get on to the task of dealing with the world's real problems."

"We challenge and call in question the establishment of mosques and Islamic centers that teach hatred and violence against non-Muslims."

As the author of these words:

I understand the calculated risks; i.e., the threat to our oil supply from Saudi Arabia, our financial vulnerability at the hands of those to whom we are in debt, etc. What is our future if driven by fear?

It is time we also engage the Islamic world at the point at which the so-called "War on Terrorism" originates -- at the heart of their belief-system.

If there are Muslims who recognize the need to save Islam from its path of hatred, violence, and commitment to world war, let them come forward now
