Am I Missing something?
Reader comment on item: Fulbright's Terrorist Tie
in response to reader comment: Pluperfect!

Submitted by Seamus MacNemi (United States), Jun 16, 2007 at 15:58

I wonder, in reading these resoponses, what is the real matter that we are dealing with here? I do not think it is Islam per se but rather it is the almost universal hatred of the Jews whereever they exist. I've seen this same thing amongst Christians and I abhor it where ever it asserts its head. But what can we do about it?

Anti Semitism in acedemia is nothing new to me. I encountered it when I was a boy in highschool in the fifties and later at college where Jews were not allowed to belong to certain fraternities. The only other peoples who were subjected to such derision were the Blacks and Irish. Being Irish, I am no stranger to the fact of being hated simple because I exist and so it is not so unusual for me to sympathize with the Jews.

Our real enemy here is racial and religious hatred and bigotry across the board and if we do not confront this deamon on its own turf then we will continually end up the losers. I once said as much to Meir Kahana years ago when we happened to meet in New York. The two of us had many such conversations and it is most probable the Jewish Defence League evolved from our conversations. I joked with Meir telling him that the Jews needed something like the IRA. I realize that many of you might not approve of either my attitude or my suggestions but that is the way that my own folk have dealt with bigots in our lives. We would put the fear of G-d into them and then wait to see if they would listen. If they didn't learn the first time we would hit them again and again until they did learn. People soon learned to leave us alone. Perhaps the Arabs need to learn the same lesson.
