What an insightful -- and, more importantly, realistic article. I am reminded of what Khrushchev once said of America: "We will take you from within." The academic world, with its anti-war polarization of the 60's and 70's, coupled with its coddling treatment of dictators and so-called revolutionaries (Castro, Che) and validation of Marxism, facilitated the work of that era's greatest enemy, the USSR. Fortunately, most of the students of the day would eventually witness the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet empire. Now, we have a situation throughout our institutions of higher (?) learning that potentially threatens national security. Our enemy can actually shroud himself in the very freedoms that make America by far the greatest country in the world. Academics by nature tend to have the most latitude and are subjected to the least scrutiny. True, it is essential to preserve these freedoms so as to avoid a "chilling effect" on communication in or out of the classroom. However, these academics are creating a huge security problem by misrepresenting the nature and goals of the islamists. They are the antithesis of true education, diluting and distorting truth instead of increasing knowledge and fostering lively debate. It seems they would jeopardize the many, rather than offend the few. The truth may upset the politically correct, but in the long run, it will empower us all. I sincerely hope this is a wake-up call for the naive and the "can't we all just get along" set.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
