A good analogy, Dave.

There was a period of time once, similar to the situation nowadays concerning Israel. It was the Thirty Years' War, between 1618 and 1648. During that time, the King of Spain was trying to assert authority over the Netherlands, and the Holy Roman Emperor refused to acknowledge the long-standing independence of Switzerland. After a devastating war, in which half of the German population was killed (by some estimates), Netherlands and Switzerland were finally accepted by the whole European community.

Today, there are many territorial disputes, dating back to the immediate aftermath of WWII. Israel is one of them; antother is India, particularly Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh. Another is Tibet, along with Taiwan and the Spratley Islands; and most dangerously for the world today, another is Korea. We are coming close to a modern-day "1648", when these issues will finally be resolved -- most likely, with a great war.
