Seeds of Hope Will Turn Out to be Pits
Reader comment on item: Arafat's Failure May Offer Seeds of Hope

Submitted by Steven Hess (United States), May 6, 2002 at 17:35

Daniel, as they say in Holywood, "I'm a big fan," but this time I think you've gone soft.
What happened to a "war of civilizations," people who love death against people who love life, museums devoted to blown up Israeli pizza parlors and a chairman's wife who would gladly stick bombs in her son's undies, if she had one? Maybe we should have chatted with Hitler after the Dresden bombings or emailed Hirohito after the Battle of Midway to see if we couldn't get him interested in the car and video game business as an alternative. It took their total and utter defeat to get the message through.
We thought we were on the righteous road in Afghanistan and look were that's heading. What they don't accomplish with AK-47's they finish with corruption.
I applaud your optimism---from your lips to God's ear, as they say--- but these folks think nightmares are dreams and there's no short term undoing of the hatred that's part of pre-school education there.
