Yeah, But. . . .

Reader comment on item: Blowback from Criticizing Trump

Submitted by Warren Miller (United States), Jul 24, 2016 at 10:47

Prof. Pipes, I stand behind no one in my admiration of your contributions to the conservative intellectual movement. I also can't stand Trump. It's worth noting that I've been a member of the GOP for more than fifty years. I knocked on doors in Denton, Texas, for a young Houston oilman named Bush in 1964, managed a GOP legislative campaign in LBJ's backyard (Austin) in 1968, and have been active ever since.

But I can't stand Hillary Clinton even more. If you are not voting for Trump, then you are, in effect, voting for Clinton. I'm 'baffled' that you're 'baffled' about the logic there. I mean, it's simple math, sir: You're denying Trump your vote, which either narrows the distance between him and Hillary (if Trump is ahead) or increase it (if he's behind). Either way, Trump is denied a vote. Why you don't get it is beyond me, but I hope my explanation helped clear out the cobwebs.

...

Nonetheless, I continue to have great respect for your insights and expertise, excluding your rationale for leaving the GOP. I think that is most regrettable. In its way, it resembles the pouting of Ted Cruz, John Kasich, and Jeb Bush. But at least, you didn't break your word by reneging on a commitment the way each of them did.

Best regards--
