Who can know the workings of the troubled mind?

It's difficult enough to know the beliefs which motivate the healthy mind, but knowing the workings of an obsessed mind guided by irrational beliefs can be far trickier. That said; my best guess is that indeed Dr. Hasan was, at least half-heartedly, stalking members of the staff, before deciding that his more urgent duty was to eradicate soldiers; who more directly threatened the lives of Muslims than commentators.
