Reader comment on item: A Call for Intelligent Profiling[ by Frederick Schauer]

Submitted by Mrs. Johanna Stephens (United States), Dec 30, 2003 at 17:44

Dear Dr. Pipes,

It is not without cause that profiling was used in this case. Terrorism is fraught with Muslims; it is their play as it were. Until Muslim leaders world-wide come forth and denounce terrorism or anything close to it, there will be profiling of these people because when caught, they have been Muslims. Granted, these particular militant Muslims are not what most Muslims are about – but their leaders are not condemning loudly and publicly that they are criminals, all terrorists who have been caught are of the Islamic faith and that faith preaches ‘Deaf to the Infidels'. I am a Christian by accident of birth, in the Muslim eye; I am an Infidel? They want me dead? My trust in dark and swarthy people these days is somewhat limited.

The ‘outrage and shock' by Muslims that one of their leaders was questioned, should make those that don't want profiling, do something about telling the world that they will expel or excommunicate any Muslim from the religion if they are terrorists or help terrorists. Until Islamic leaders are forthcoming with such an edict, the world has a right to profile the known enemy. By their very silence, they are condoning terrorism and deserve the attention they are getting from those whose job it is to protect the public from terrorism.

My husband and I enjoy all your articles so very much. However, an intellectual approach to profiling at this time is not appropriate, nor will it be in the future unless the Muslim world takes an honest step in cleaning up its militants.

Happy New Year to you and yours!

Sincerely,
Johanna M. Stephens
