Sayed Malike was not a lone wolf bomber or a copy cat Al Qaeda. Someone paid for his airline ticket, hotel room, travel expenses and a very expensive Sony Carl Zeiss video camera. I believe he had a handler who chose to remain somewhat anonymous because Malike was not "stable".
