in response to reader comment: why I like Musharraf
Submitted by rick (United States), Sep 13, 2006 at 17:48
If Musharaf is two faced and a protector of al-Qaeda then Pakistan is a lost cause. I take it you are Indian and Indian and Pakistanis are like fire and water. My Bangledeshi neighbor doesn't like Pakistanis either - with good reason.
However, many of the al-Qaeda "big fish" were caught in Pakistan by Pakistani police/army. How do you explain that?
Also, bin Laden is probably in a part of Pakistan that even the army is loathe to go. A sort of wild wild west where clan is everything.
As for Khan, you're right on that.
My views on how to proceed is the opposite of Bush. I believe in 90% covert operations and 10% overt or "public" operations. Lists should be compiled and the names x'ed out. And mullahs - so called religious men are not immune. On the contrary, mullahs should be targeted just as the terrorists they create.
The Middle East first has to confront the past 700 years before we will see any of our Western expectations met. Islam has to undergo a Reformation or its finished. I believe weare witnessing a dying religion. Any religion which advocates terrorism, beheading, misogyny, honor killlings, the suppression of half its population, the intolerant of others and their beliefs, etc. cannot but disappear. It is the fascism of out time and instead of German Panzer Corps it depends on demented bombers and mullahs who praise them.
It is actually not a difficlut enemy to defeat once you are able to cross the line into their mortal code - or immoral as it may be. You must be ruthless - as ruthless os a Saddam but not against an entire people as he was but against specific individuals and perhaps their families.
Democracy for Bush is sort of like a Christian fundamentalism. Bush believes basically everyone yearns for openness, freedom and democracy and once they have it , it alone will wash away all the biases, hates, intolerances, etc., and these men will be re-born into accepting those things their old ways prohibited them from doing.
Nice but I don't see it that way. One thousand years of history, a people whose failures are only re-inforced by new techonology, countries simply cannot compete in this world. For these people the old hates have more meaning than Western ideas of democracy . These hates are real, the people believe in them. Democracy is new, unproven and has no real meaning.
Anyway, appreciate your comments. Aside from Musharaf, I have never heard a person speak about the religion of Islam which impressed me as a religion. I consider it a Death Cult, a way to block out anything not understood, a way to surpress your spirit, to deny hope and to make you realize you have many natural enemies. Musharaf's words did affect me but you are probably right in what you say. After all is there any Muslim leader who does not pay homage to terrorism in some way or another, either at a distance or close up?
