Reader comment on item: Passing as Shi'i in Iraq

Submitted by Phil Horn (United States), Aug 17, 2006 at 18:21

Initially we supported the Shiites against the Sunnis who supported Saddam. Now we support the Sunnis against the Shiites because the latter support Hezbollah. What we have is total confusion, a situation getting worse daily and a country (Iraq) intimidated by terrorists. Are we really better off now or were we with that bastard Hussein who kept the shiites down and threatened Iran.

All this was forseeable then and is certainly clear now. Regretably, our only possible gain in Iraq will be the creation of an independent Kurdish state. If the other Sunni Arabs are disturbed about what is happening to their co-religionists in Iraq, let them do something about it.
