Laura Bier longs for the days before the Web arrived

Reader comment on item: An Inadvertent Endorsement of Campus Watch [at Georgia Tech]

Submitted by Yoel Natan (United States), Apr 17, 2006 at 12:51

Laura Bier comments: "I think of the career that I dreamed about during endless years of graduate school and dissertation writing that might be destroyed."

First, her picture shows that she looks young for having had endured "endless years of grad school." Second, her dream was illusionary. Not even an op-ed writer writing for free can take such one-sided views without being called on the carpet anymore, so why should a professor who gets pay and pension be immune from criticism? The days when editors and "those crazy professors" could just trash letters of complaint without opening and reading them are gone forever now that the Web has arrived.
