Polio wiil live long after man is gone

Reader comment on item: A Conspiracy Theory Spreads Polio

Viruses mutate, back mutate. They were present on this earth long before man, they will be here long after man has vanished. They will survive, the end of polio is a myth. Salk & Sabin did manage to do one thing, they opened Pandora"s Box. SV-40 contaminated both vaccines. It is estimated that 98,000,000 Americans were exposed to SV-40. SV-40 has been found in mesothelioma, medulloblastoma, fibrosarcoma (it is found in the tumor, not the surrounding tissue) just to name a few.

While the attempt to maipulate biology may, at times appear the logical thing to do. Our headlong rush to meddle with the basic mechanics of life comes with consequences. We would be wise to ask not only how to acomplish such advances, but whether all such advances are truly in the best interest of mankind, of life, as a whole. Even the most admirable motivation to advance science needs to be tempered with caution. Polio vaccine as a whole has been a mixed bag, the Cutter incident, SV-40, this vaccine was rushed to market as the researchers in the labs cautioned officials that there were problems, contaminates that were unknowns. Sound science was cast aside, assumptions were made. Pandora's Box is open. Conspiracy?
You bet.
