The state of the holy land was never sorrier than 1865 when Mark Twain walked the Land (The Innocents Abroad). His descriptions are heart rending, if your heart is set on the Holy Land. The Arab population was few and far between, mostly nomadic and destitute. It is only when the Jews began their return that Arabs immigrated, for the opportunities offered by the dynamic Jewish enterprise. Should Israel succumb, the Holy Land is likely to revert to the desert, and again wait for her redeemers.
