Doesn't Bauer agree with Pipes that Islam today is in a mess?

Reader comment on item: A Culture of Ambiguity

Submitted by Malcolm (Israel), Dec 29, 2021 at 05:55

Without having Bauer's book at hand, and merely accepting what Mr. Pipes writes about the book, it seems that Bauer agrees with Pipes that Islam today is in a big mess. Unlike the great deceiver, Edward Said. So it would have been useful for others who lack the book to have heard from Mr. Pipes all the problematic features of contemporary Islam on which the two are in agreement. Could Mr. Pipes oblige us with a short summary? Then we could quote both of them together to that effect.

Daniel Pipes replies:

Yes, Bauer and I agree that modern Islam has major problems. But he blames Westerners for this and I blame the Muslims.
