Dear Dr Pipes:
I request your readers to quietly and non-violently meditate about Islamic hypocrisy. Today's Wall Street Journal reported that Indian government recently passed a law that will disallow citizenship to Muslim illegal immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh but would allow citizenships to oppressed minorities from Pakistan and Bangladesh belonging to other religions. Pakistan and Bangladesh are majority Islamic nations carved out of India in 1947. There is no reason to believe that Muslims in Pakistan and Bangladesh will face religious persecution. So -- at least on principle-- the Indian law seems to be on sound footing.
If you protest on behalf of Muslims there will be thousand New Channels willing to interview you. If you protest to highlight Islamic hypocrisy, you will be called a bigot. India is seeing protests all over the country in opposition to this law. No one is willing to say that India neither has moral obligation nor duty to accept Muslims from Islamic Pakistan or Bangladesh.
I request your readers to silently reflect for five minutes on this and similar issues. Reflect peacefully. meditate. In your book ('Nothing Abides') you close one chapter by saying (my paraphrasing) that Islam can reform itself and become an Islam that does not threaten civilization. We cannot protest on the streets as hypocrites do but we can pray. A-men.
