The Turks are Sunni, meaning an opposing force to Iran. Them, being in control of parts of Syria gives the west therefore an advantage rather then the bleak outcome you see. They do come instead of the Sunni Kurds, but those were too weak to stand against the Iran - Syria - Russia forces anyway
