Why I'm Now a Euro-Optimist

Reader comment on item: Europe's Epochal Elections

Submitted by Dave (United States), Dec 9, 2016 at 16:26

On the principle that everyone likes a winner and wants to be one, the rise of the populist parties in Europe cannot be lost on the mainstream politicians who finally seem to be getting the message about open borders and cultural preservation. This is good news because it means that a saner crowd can take up the banner and maybe keep Europe from going over a cliff. Among other virtues, at least the mainstream is not in love with Vladimir Putin, thereby demonstrating a healthy capacity to recognize authoritarianism.

One does not have to be a fascist to understand the importance of protecting the West, nor does one have to compromise Western values to do so. At least, that's the best case scenario.
