I disagree with your point that the elder Assad never came close to destroying Israel. In 1973, during the Yom Kippur War, it came down to essentially a few extraordinarily brave tankists on the Golan Heights that at the very last moment, and with massive loss of life, managed to stop the Syrian army sweeoing into Northern Israel. In one case, one tank held off an entire Syrian battalion.
