Reader comment on item: Egypt's Military Holds onto Power

Submitted by Charles Martel (United States), Jul 20, 2011 at 15:58

An outright military dictatorship, even behind the scenes, is the best that can be hoped for Egypt.

However, the military will need an ideology and Nasserism/Baathism/secular nationalism has run its course and visibly failed -- that is going to leave Islam, made more attractive by the hope that it will make the Moslem Brotherhood quiescent.

So, I hope you're right about the military staying in control, but I'm afraid that the price that the military will pay to keep their power and perks is regretful but real adherence to MB-style Salafism, just like the Saudis have embraced Wahabis (I refuse to use the double-h, we're transliterating into MY language) even if they would rather not. Likewise, even Turkey's secular military bastion has lost a lot of its resilience against Islam.

I fear that we will end up with a military state where the MB can dictate a lot of policies because the military doesn't actually care beyond having the perks of power.
