Not to Worry

Reader comment on item: Fin de RĂ©gime in Syria?

Submitted by Barry Black (United States), May 24, 2011 at 17:07

The Al-Assad regime is not going to be displaced so fast. Like Saddam Hussein's Iraq, Syria is ruled by a crime cabal of corruption. In essence, it's a mafia ruling a country very similar to what would have happened in Cuba if Bastista had stayed in power and completed the deal with the US crime syndicate. Nothing short of an invasion is going to displace the Al-Assad regime. Syria is not Egypt or Turkey where a wary and legitimate military watches over things and only tolerate acceptable corruption. In Syria, the military is part of the cabal. They know if you kill enough demonstrators and jail enough dissidents things do have a way of calming down!
