Do Liberals need to be attacked?

Reader comment on item: The 9/11 Commission Report – Now What?

Its good to hear that the authorities have already made true permanent changes. As Mr. Pipes worries that they willl not name the enemy I wonder why this is such a crucial point.

'Liberals' will often point out the Oklahoma City attack and see it as equivalent to Islamacist attacks, they see the dangers to civil liberties and worry about the risks to our values if different types of people are singled out. They think of McCarthyism and witch trials and conjure up the worst abuses of power and want to just see the concept of "terror". This is a valid although uninformed position.

This article points out people who identified the threats long before the attack on Sept 11, 2001. They are not geniuses, they merely pay attention to the public words, acts and number of followers and tacit supporters of the self declared enemies of the US/the West/Jews/Israel/Infidels. What is frustrating is that so much of the public refuse to, or dont want to, acknowledge this islamacist self declared war even after 9-11. They want it to be considered a generic "terrorism". From there its not a difficult leap of pseudo-analysis for them to call any military action "terorism" because they dont want to differentiate and take any sides in a world of moral relativism. One almost wants them to be attacked so they realize somone has declared war on them and their role is important in managing this danger in a realistic and balanced way by society.

The islamacists have clearly infiltrated the west and understand it. They are actually a part of it (more in Europe than in the US). They use the west's freedoms to their advantage. Yet, the people of the west, 'liberals in particular' will hardly scratch the surface in learning about the obvious and outward hatred and support expressed in the societies from which the terrorists are spawned. It can be blamed on language gaps or just laziness but its probably their fear of believing their own analysts and being duped by their own societies because thats the danger we have been brought up to think about since vietnam.

This internal strife in the west could be a greater danger in the long run than the terrorists themselves. Either people become more informed or the terrorists will win even if they fail to attack.
