Lieberman's win in Israeli elections

Reader comment on item: Who Won in Israel's Elections?

Submitted by Ghulam Muhammed (India), Feb 12, 2009 at 01:56

Lieberman's call to disenfranchise Israeli Arabs, on vague indeterminate trumped up pretexts, seriously violates the spirit of democracy in Israel. The West has a stake in Israel's democracy as Israel's own favourite US President had declared that democracies don't go to war. In as much as Israel has unleashed a 'war' on the undefended civilian population of Gaza, it would expose that Israel's democracy is deeply flawed. Instead of courting and accommodating and winning their goodwill, the attempt to marginalize Arabs, speaks loudly about the nature of Israel's democratic credentials. No occasion is spared when Israel as a democratic nation is not touted about. Lieberman's success in polls exposes the fascist underpinning of Israel's political spectrum. The world should think hundred times, before it confirms the democratic credential of a theocratic state.
