How to Deal With Islam? I disagree

Reader comment on item: Scholarship about Islam in America

At the end of his discussion on Dr. Pipes, Professor Ahmed writes that "There is a need to understand the Muslim community, its history and its traditions." I would disagree: I personally am not interested either in understanding or having any communication in any form with a civilization that breeds the types of monsters who have raised their ugly heads around the world for the last fifty years, leading up to the atrocity of 911 and the systematic and daily execution of innocent Jews.

It is interesting that Professor Ahmed says that America is the Muslims' "beloved nation," and that they were doubly outraged on 911 not only by the attacks but by the fact that Muslims were the perpetrators. Funny how I don't remember that; strange that I recall an overwhelming silence with very few exceptions from the Muslim community in the face of a bloody and merciless attack on innocents; disconcerting that the main Muslim reaction that I remember was concern about their community not being the object of ridicule, retaliation, or the ever present "bigotry."

Despite my overwhelming respect for Dr. Pipes, I believe that even he has not seen... . "Islamists" are not an aberration, but the logical outgrowth of the Islamic civilization. They are "the fruit of the poisonous tree" ...

Islamism has demonstrated that its existence threatens the very survival of humankind. The number of its practitioners is irrelevant to that fundamental truth. And, despite Dr. Pipes' pleas, there is no time to wait for Islam to have its "reformation." Modern nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons make such a wait foolish and suicidal.

America does not need to "understand" Islam. America knows all she needs to know. It is time for America to deal with Islam.
