Reader comment on item: Mideast Isn't Seen in Left-Right Terms

Submitted by anon (United States), Dec 24, 2006 at 19:17

Well, one thing that is different is the Soviet Union is gone. But the thesis of the article remains, that views on the ME can't be divided among left-right lines. Increasingly, however, pro-Israel sentiment has been shifting to the right, and both far-right conservatives and left wing liberals have attacked neoconservatives as being Jewish and putting Israel's interests foremost. Most members of Bush's administration, his supporters and Republicans in general tend to be neocon. The article also explains that lobbies have influence on ME policy because of the bureaucracies. People have been vilifying Israel lately for its lobbies and ascribing to it more power than it has, but its actual powers are understandable, and it is effective. One wonders with all the anti-lobby sentiment if that will remain the case.
