I'd never read a book of hers. I seemed to always know who she was as she was just older than I. I remember her always being in Viet Nam. I remember the Kissinger interview. I remember the Arafat one as well. I always thought she was a fearsome person, one who just kept coming.
Then, I forgot about her until Rage and Prejudice and then read Force of Reason. I seem to spend a fair amount of my time trying to get others to read the book with little success. I've never read anything more powerful or crystallizing than her writing. Each word seems chosen to have the maximum impact and clarity.
I am very sorry to have her gone when she is so needed. I cannot help but share her pessimism especially as the Pope wobbles along trying to find a way to apologize for nothing just to appease all those who fear Islam and all the Muslims who hate and dispise everything the Pope represents. Islam, as Oriana pointed out so forcefully, is NOT a religion of peace.
