There is an extremely simple solution to this. Resign from the EU (which Malta joined not too long ago) and take control back. Malta can then decide itself (without any interference whatsoever from Brussels) how to deal with the problem, which would more likely solve itself since the migrants would more likely never land in Malta in the first place. For those who do not know the situation, prior to Malta joining the EU this problem was non-existent.
This island is simply too small to abide by the niceties of the EU, mostly made up to countries much, much larget than itself. As long as the Maltese stay within the EU this problem will worsen with one of two possible outcomes; either (a) the Maltese will have to resign themselves to living with overwhelming numbers of these migrants, (b) the situation will explode into something that the EU officials (in their highly paid position, comfortable office in Brussels) would find unacceptable.
What the EU should have in place is a quota system where every member state accepts the same percentage (per capita) of migrants, that way no one can complain that they are 'suffering' more than their share. I won't hold my breath on that one happening any time soon though !
