The Art Of The Deal

Reader comment on item: Feeling Optimistic about Israel and the Emirates

Submitted by Gary Sack (United States), Aug 15, 2020 at 21:54

I think the deal between Israel and UAE is a stroke of genius that many misunderstand. Let's remember that when Trump announced his "deal of the century", though the highlight was Israeli annexation of part of Judea, the plan always included the creation of a palestinian state, not just aspirational, but spelled out in detail, plus major economic benefits, and what for all practical purposes, the end of terrorism. As time went on one wondered why Israel and the U.S. couldn't come together on the map details. Well now you know...certainly the UAE deal, with the expected addition of other Arab countries, didn't just happen in the last week. The idea clearly is not to just create relations between Israel and Arab countries, but to put the screws to the PA and Hamas. This is misunderstood even by many Israelis who are blaming Netanyahu for not taking advantage of annexation. But that is clearly something that will be included in this much larger triumph. This deal also will provide for fruition of a real 2 state solution, so all those who have been locked into that thinking, excoriating Trump in the process, will get their wish. The "art of the deal" indeed. Let's hope those whose agenda is to mess with Israel, or eliminate her, lose in the end.
