This week three Syrians turned the page in the book of German history

Reader comment on item: Islamist Violence Will Steer Europe's Destiny

Let met report on an event that has been quite misreported by the international press opening their headlines with "Police in Germany arrest ...". The true story, and one that is still unfolding as I am writing this, should rather start with "Three Syrians arrest a jihadi ... ".

"Der Spiegel" in its English edition writes "Refugees Celebrate Capture of Terror Suspect". http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/syrian-terror-suspect-caputured-by-syrian-refugees-a-1116074.html

What happened? Some days ago the Syrian refugee and jihadi Mr. Al-Bakr escaped an arrest attempt by the German police and left half a kilo of prepared explosives behind. Syrian refugees in Germany self-organised a man-hunt in support of the police. When Al-Bakr on the run asked his fellow countrymen for shelter he got trapped by three Syrians. They tied him up and delivered him to the police. Today Al-Bakr committed suicide in prison.

Primarily this event supports your article's analysis that it is the Islamists, not the Europeans, who will write European history. Note again: it was three refugees, not the German police, who caught Al-Bakr. His arrest suggests that it will also be the non-Islamist immigrants in Europe who equally will determine the fate of Europe.

Let me contrast this week's events against those one year ago. On Tuesday, Germany's soccer team played Northern Ireland in Hannover. The previous match in Hannover, in 2015, was cancelled as a result of terror-threats following the Paris attacks. Germany did play in Paris in November 2015 as bombs were denoting just outside of the arena. This week the attack was thwarted by the Syrian community in Germany. 10 lives were saved - or was that 100 or 200? In 2015, jihadis got massive support from the Molenbeek neighbourhood in Brussels. In 2016, Arabs supported Germany rather than jihad.

To me, this is a victory over jihad in an environment in which jihadis enjoy the advantage. Germany now has three new citizens, and very valuable ones at that. I see their heroic act in the context of the Nazi dictatorship. Germany has for decades been looking back at the singular, late, and somewhat pathetic attempt by Stauffenberg to kill Hitler; where Stauffenberg failed those three Syrians succeeded. They shine as Germany's first-ever effective resistance fighters Germany.

This is why I say they turned the page of the book of German history. Looking at the massive support from the Syrian community that ad-hoc organised itself I recognize glory beyond victory.

What a fascinating analysis. I hope your optimism proves correct.
