Invitation to Muslims to convert

Reader comment on item: Is CAIR Lying about a Rally for Hamas?

Submitted by John (United States), Aug 26, 2014 at 14:08

Dear Dr Pipes, the madness in the name of Islam (just recall the non-human murder of James Foley) has reached the proportion at which it is time for other religions of the world to explicitly invite Muslims to convert out of Islam. No one knows whether Islam can be blamed for this violence but everyone can see that there is more violence inside and around Islam than any where else. Also, in Islam there may be more fight and argumentation about what God is or is not but true spirituality and humility are lost around this argumentation about the form and desires of God.

Muslims seek conversion of everybody. There is now no harm that every body now seeks conversion of Muslims out of Islam. What do you think, Dr Pipes?

Daniel Pipes replies:

Yes, that could resonate but note the historical reluctance to convert out of Islam in substantial numbers that I recorded on p. 173 of In the Path of God:

The few communities of Muslims to apostacize did so under duress or with expectation of specific gain. In seventeenth-century Russia, a regulation prohibiting non-Christians from owning serfs led to the conversion of rich Tatars, including the ancestors of such luminaries as the musician Sergei Rachmaninoff, the poet and historian Nicholas Karamzin, and the novelist Ivan Turgenyev. Around 1700, some ruling families among the Sunni Muslims in Lebanon converted to Christianity to increase their political standing. But such cases were extremely rare.
