Reader comment on item: Morsi vs. Hamas, Hamas vs. Morsi
in response to reader comment: Several reports confirm the Sept 1 update

Subsequent reports stated that the Egyptian component of the U.S. Foreign Aid program had come under review by the O'Bama Administration after the coup against Morsi. Most of Egypt's foreign aid is in the form of military aid.

The military crackdown on Gaza and terrorists in the Sinai came from the same Egyptian mlitiary that was willing to allow it under Morsi and even Mubarek. By cracking down on terrorism in Gaza, the Egyptian military gains favor in both Washington and Jerusalem for doing what they were supposed to all along. In addition, as others have noticed, there isn't a big "world outcry" when the Egyptians act against HAMAS. There is an advantage to Egypt doing this "dirty work".

By cracking down on terrorist smuggling (as opposed to legitimate trade), the Egyptian military regime is giving Israel and the United States an incentive to support their continued rule. That's all fine and well as long as the regime can still pay its soldiers.

The main problem still persists: Egypt is going broke.

If Egypt goes broke and can't pay its soldiers; what then?
