Egyptian nationalism v. Caliphate

Reader comment on item: Discussing Egypt and Islam

Dr. Pipes

The most surprising issue in the recent Egyptian popular "coup" against Morsi was the question of what is really Egypt and Egyptian nationalism more so after Magdi Akef one of the leaders of the MB in Egypt uttered his now infamous: Toz fi Masr or طز في مصر or to hell with Egypt and the funny thing is he never apologized for stupid and unpatriotic remark

I suspect many moderate Muslims that most likely supported Morsi and the MB in the elections were disgusted with such remark

Now enter the late Pope Shenouda and his famous saying: مصر ليست وطنا نعيش فيه بل وطن يعيش فينا

Or Egypt is not a homeland where we live but (our) homeland that resides in us

Now what was the response of MB ? it was: مصر سكن وليست وطن or Egypt is a place of residence and it is not (our) homeland (after all the homeland is really the caliphate)

I cannot prove it but I suspect that the question of Egyptian nationalism v. the MB's view of the world was on the mind of many moderate Muslims
