Dr. Pipes

This is an amazing interview of Mohamed Hassanain Heikal the outstanding Egyptian journalist and the editor in chief of al-Ahram for a long period of time and his views of the recent coup against Morsi and el-Ikhwan.

Heikal makes it very clear that the Obama administration made a fatal mistake by what he calls محاربة الاسلام بالاسلام or fighting (militant Islam) with Islam in other words the Obama adminstration supported the MB and wanted them to come to power and remain in power because Mr Obama believed that this would defeat militant Islam which is naive at best

Again Heikal believes that Mr Obama had no clue about the rule of Egyptian nationalism in the hearts and minds of even pious Muslims in Egypt and indeed this is why millions walked in what must have been the biggest political demonstration in history and indeed this was also the reason why Morsi had to go because his plans were about the caliphates and not Egypt. And his fatal mistake is politics is a local game first and last and it is about housing and jobs and the local economy and not this abstract caliphate

I guess our leaders do not see beyond what they think they know and what they know is very little

I wish we would have the likes of Mr Heikal in our country a man who knows how to think

Here is the interview.
