How could they " identify fundamentalist Islam as the enemy" when they did define it as the main strategic ally in their global struggle against the Soviet Union and all it stood for as well as against the Arab nationalism ? Just take a look at Rober Dreyfuss' brilliant exposure of this strategy :

"Devil's Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam".

There is also an interesting video with the author himself talking about the subject. His book is to my mind one of the most important books ever written.
