US policy in the Middle East

Reader comment on item: [Symposium on] The U.S. and Israel

Submitted by peterr (United States), Apr 28, 2012 at 04:48

Given the animosity towards the US in most Middle Eastern countries, one would think that having a reliable staunch ally in the region would be a valuable asset that should be cultivated and nourished. On top of that, they are a democracy with relatively stable structure and government that can be depended upon for negotiations. If Israel had oil reserves for export in any meaningful capacity, there would be a different reality in the ME It is a puzzle that there is not more support for the democratic free state that produces goods, scientific and medical contributions, new technologies that are in use the world over, and stands for freedom and rights of women and the gay community. Only in Israel will you find dissent against government in a democratic fashion, unlike the dictatorships that have been running the Arab countries.
