What proportion of Muslims are Islamist fundamentalists?

Reader comment on item: Support the lesser evil [in Saudi Arabia]

I have heard several radio interviews of you and have read some of your articles, all of which are informative. I have heard estimates regarding the estimated portion of Muslims who are regarded as fundamentalist or Islamists. What do you estimate is the proportion of Islamists compared to the total Muslim population world wide?

Daniel Pipes replies:

I estimate 10-15 percent worldwide.
