In a very useful attempt to track the aggression of militant Islam, Jos Smith of the Dutch business newspaper NRC Handelsblad has compiled a list of 393 major jihadist attacks around the world since September 11, 2001. The newspaper page requires a password, so I have posted the chart.

The list counts 7,085 dead and 10,132 wounded – numbers that need to be made widely known.

Many of the attacks took place in the places one would expect – 88 in Iraq, 72 in Algeria, 51 in Israel, and 46 in India. Others are from places less heard from, such as the 36 in Thailand and the 6 in Uzbekistan.

The NRC Handelsblad list represents a worthy start at tallying up the damage, though it is severely incomplete. For example, the Israel Defense Forces counts 85 Palestinian terrorist attacks since September 11, 2001, many more than does NRC Handelsblad. And the United States, according to the paper, has not experienced a single act of terror since 9/11 – ignoring such incidents as the LAX murders and the Beltway snipers.

Comment: A truly complete survey of jihadist violence is urgently needed. (April 16, 2004)

Sept. 5, 2004 update: The ironically titled "Religion of Peace" website provides a massive listing of "terrorist attacks committed by determined Muslims since 9/11/01." The site has hundreds of entries, providing in each case the date, country, city, number killed and injured, and a brief description.
