Since 1984, the courthouse of the County of Santa Rosa, in Florida's panhandle, has had on one side of the building a Nativity scene. This year it is joined on the courthouse's other side by an "all-inclusive" Christmas display sponsored by the local chapters of Americans United for Separation of Church and the American Civil Liberties Union. The Pensacola News Journal, which reported this development, also thoughtfully provided a picture of the latter display at night, and it is memorable indeed, with a crescent surrounding and seemingly gobbling up a Star of David.

Jan. 17, 2004 update: A reader sends this perfect complement to the above, where a crescent is about to gobble up an American star.

This logo derives, by the way, from the year 2000 conference held by the American Muslim Alliance, an organization that declares itself working "towards political empowerment of the American Muslim community" through "methodically gain[ing] influence in the American political system commensurate with the sum total of our skills and creativity, resourcefulness, imagination, moral and ethical concerns, our intellectual contributions and our strength of numbers."

The UASR vision.

June 2, 2004 update: For another logo along these lines, see that of the Islamic Committee on Scouting at http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/253

Aug. 8, 2004 update: And then there is this logo, provided by the United Association for Studies and Research under the title "Islamic Vision for the 21st Century."

July 7, 2006 update: Ihtisham Hibatullah, co-ordinator of the huge IslamExpo at London's Alexandra Palace, escorted a BBC reporter through the exhibit and stopped at a gallery of work by British Muslim artists, where he said:

Islam is not just part of the East anymore. It began there, but is now very much part of Europe, part of Britain. Look at these pictures. Here is one of the Union Jack in the style of Islamic calligraphy. I don't think the flag is the trade mark of the British National Party anymore, is it?

Sadly, the BBC account does not replicate "the Union Jack in the style of Islamic calligraphy."
