Reader comment on item: Debate over the civil war in Syria

Submitted by PAUL SEVERIEN (Australia), Dec 24, 2015 at 18:53

I'M AFRAID I DON'T AGREE WITH DR PIPES REGARDING THE ASSAD REGIME. IT MAY NOT BE LEGITIMATE ALTHOUGH THAT IS DEBATABLE BUT IT IS CERTAINLY THE ONLY STABLE AND I EMPHASIZE STABLE, REGIME IN SYRIA.

FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE REVOLT ASSAD HAS BEEN SAYING THAT HE WAS FIGHTING TERRORISTS AND NO ONE, ESPECIALLY THE US, PAID ANY ATTENTION TO HIM. THE AMERICAN TRAINING OF A "FREE SYRIAN ARMY"HAS BEEN A DISASTER AND MOST REBEL GROUPS WHICH ARE SUNNI, ARE TERRORISTS.

AGAIN, THE US STRIVES TO REPLACE THE SYRIAN GOVERNMENT WHO, AFTER ALL, WERE PROTECTING MINORITIES SINCE ASSAD AND CO. ARE IN THE MINORITY. CHRISTIANS AND OTHER MINORITIES WOULD BE PERSECUTED UNDER ANY OF THESE REBEL GROUPS. THE OBAMA REGIME DOESN'T KNOW WHO TO BACK AS LONG AS THEY ARE SUNNI AND FRIENDS.
