Dr, Pipes has written and debated on this topic extensively, indicating that it is a serious topic (almost as much as whether Islam is a religion of peace).

and also a very entertaining debate with Mayor Ken Livingstone (Douglas Murray is fantastic). By the end of the debate, most agreed that Islam was not compatible with democracy.
