Germans were defeated & accepted remake

Reader comment on item: The case for 'Iraqification'

Submitted by Gary Wimberly (United States), Feb 3, 2004 at 09:32

In your article, you stated, "Germans and Japanese were each defeated as a people, ground down by a multi-year total war, and so they accepted the remake of their societies and cultures."

Nothing is quite that simple. According to veterans of the Berlin Airlift, the Germans did not like us (Americans) immediately after WW II. Veterans told me that the local Germans would get up and leave bars in Berlin if any Americans came into the bar. They did not like Americans.

However, things changed with the Berlin Airlift. Then, German attitudes changed significantly for the better for German-American relations.
