Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict XVI Changes His Tone

Submitted by Edward Morus (Italy), May 28, 2007 at 15:49

The Pope believes in a moderate Islam leading the way to a kind of reformation of the religion. He knows it will be painful, take a long time, and may never be achieved, but that's a view he's long held. He hasn't been intimidated by Islam, but he has wised up to realizing that Islam will not reform if it keeps getting riled by the West. For this reason, he's going to make the Vatican department for interreligious dialogue separate again, having only last year merged it with the department for culture. Dialogue is the only way forward, and he's humble enough to realise this.
